Free Tetris

Today, fans of video games or in fact gaming of any sort pretty well know the foundations of what is arguably today the number one entertainment form. One of these foundation games is Tetris – known by millions around the world and one of the popular games to waste our time with.

But a question which has been the subject of a few lawsuits is: “Who invented Online Tetris?” The most common name mentioned as the creator of Tetris is a Russian programmer by the name of Aleksey Pazhitnov. Aleksey currently lives in the U.S. although he does visit Russia occasionally, and hit up the arcades!

According to Pazhitnov, the ability to Play Free Tetris Games appeared absolutely by accident. Working in the area of artificial intellignence, he also worked on programming puzzle games. Aleksey was a fan of the table game, Pentomino – a game played by placing small, square or rectangular pieces in a box. He decided to program on a Russian Electronica 60, a variation of Pentomino. The variation included a simplification, removing filled lines and a few other things to make the game last longer.

The game was called Tetris. Tetra from the latin referring to the number of small squares in the game and adding an ‘is’ to make it a lot easier to remember. It wasn’t until 1988 that it became popular in Europe and the United States and then only after the game was rewritten to work on the personal computer. Playing Tetris became a cult classic with the release of the Nintendo Gameboy. Selling 30,000 copies, the game was a hit. But not for Aleksey Pazhitnov. Because he worked for the Moscow Academy, all royalties and rights were held by the Academy for 10 years. It was only in 1995 that Pazhitnov began receiving royalties. He moved to the United States in and 1990 and Aleksey recently ‘retired’ from Microsoft – he wanted a rest but understandably, he can return when he wants.

Play Tetris, its lots of fun and even a little hypnotic. The game will continue to be an immensely popular game – give it a try at one of the many online sites. My favorite was playing at the arcade.
